SATO, Takahiro (G-COE Assistant Professor )(FY2007 -)
Main research interest: Building artificial society on
Sustainable Water Use in Tamil Nadu, India
>>Project Title of
Global COE Program

I have been using an agro-ecological perspective to study effective irrigation timing for wheat production in northern Syria, and building an agricultural statistics database on Mainland Southeast Asia. I have also conducted analyses on spatial-temporal changes of rice production in the Southeast Asia region. For the G-COE project, I plan to analyze the spatial-temporal changes of water use in Tamil Nadu, India, and use the findings to build an artificial society that would point to the future institutional and /or technological harmonization of sustainable water use and the livelihood of the people in this area.

NISHI, Makoto (G-COE Assistant Professor )(FY2007 -)
Main research interest: HIV/AIDs in Ethiopia
>>Project Title of
Global COE Program

I have been engaged in research among the Gurage people, in Ethiopia since 1995, and have published several papers on the formation of their ethnic identities and on their activities in community-based rural development projects. Currently I am working on HIV/AIDS prevention in Ethiopia, again focusing on the Gurage people. I specifically plan to examine how they interpret the risks related to HIV/AIDS by looking into the activities of community-based organizations formed to promote solidarity among those infected by the virus.

FUJITA, Motoko(G-COE Researcher)(FY2008 -)  Personal website >>
Main research interest:Avian Ecology, Nutrient Cycling,
Conservation Ecology

>>Project Title of
Global COE Program

I have been interested in the role of birds in nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. Urbanization has caused both an increase of birds, such as crows, and forest fragmentation. As a result, birds feeding in residential areas transport feces-derived N and P from residential areas to the fragmented forest. The significance of this in terms of maintaining biodiversity in terms of nutrient cycling is still not known. Furthermore, tropical regions are known for a rapid decrease in biodiversity due to the human impact. How the decrease in biodiversity affects the nutrient cycling might also be my research theme.

WADA, Taizo(G-COE Researcher)(FY2008 -)
Main research interest: Field medicine, Geriatrics, Epidemiology
>>Project Title of
Global COE Program
I have been engaged in the study of field medicine, especially with regards to the study of geriatrics across the countries of Southeast Asia and also Japan. My colleagues and I have clarified the functional abilities and mental health of the community-dwelling aged in those countries. The concept of the Quality of Life (QOL) could be defined essentially as "human well-being". However the affects that a person's cultural and religious background have on the QOL is unclear. My current research interest is concerned with clarifying the universality and diversity of QOL. I also would like to assess the QOL during the end of life and the quality of individual death with dignity from the point of view of practical setting.

SATO, Shiro(G-COE Researcher)(FY2010 -)
Main research interest:I have studied nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation measures that can be taken to enhance international peace and security. I place special emphasis on measures to regulate the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons. My second research theme is a reconsideration of the methodology of international relations from Asian and African perspectives. In this context, I have put forth a theory of “Global Area Studies” or “Regional International Relations (i.e., Non-Western International Relations).” As part of this G-COE Program, I would like to explore a new paradigm of “sustainable humanosphere” with this academic perspective.

FY2007-2009 New position of ex-GCOE researchers

ENDO, Tamaki (G-COE Post Doctoral Researcher)(FY2007 -)
Main research interest:
Urban Development and Informal Economy

*Dr. Endo has been appointed as a  lecture of the Faculty of Economics, Saitama University from the 1st of April 2009.

>>Project Title of
Global COE Program
My work focuses on issues of urban development and the informal economy in developing countries like Thailand. I examine these issues from the perspectives of Urban Economics, Development Economics and Area Studies. Among the specific issues I have looked at so far are the dynamic relationship between the informal economy and labour, and the various aspects of life among the urban lower-class. With the findings from these research, I hope to contribute to the G-COE by helping conceptualize the ideal model of a sustainable city in developing societies under globalization, but one that is based on respect of the regional and local context.

UBUKATA, Fumikazu (G-COE Assistant Professor)(FY2007 -)
Main research interest: Resource Economics,
Development and Environment

*Dr. Ubukata has been appointed as a  Associate Professor, Graduate School of Environmental Science, Okayama University from the 1st of September 2009.

>>Project Title of
Global COE Program
I have conducted research on the following two subjects in Thailand; 1) changing trends in the pulp industry and its mode of procurement of raw material, especially eucalyptus trees; and 2) institutional changes in community-based natural resource management. I plan to integrate these two topics by examining them in the context of institutional formation and its effects on environmental governance. I am also eager to expand my study area from Thailand to other Asian countries, and to study the processes in which regional peculiarities affect pathways of institutional development.

KOZAN, Osamu (G-COE Assistant Professor)(FY2008 -)
Main research interest:Hydrology and Civil engineering

*Dr. Kozan has been appointed as an associate professor of Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University from the 1st of April 2009.

>>Project Title of
Global COE Program
My background is in hydrology and civil engineering. I have developed a hydrological circulation model of the Huaihe River basin in China and the Aral Sea basin in Central Asia. An estimation of the impact of the land surface on heat and the hydrological cycle is important for both weather forecast and climate change analysis. In order to understand heat and water movements, it is important to appreciate not only computer simulation but also local people and their lifestyles. I plan to integrate various kinds of data and combine them in order to provide useful information in this regard.

KIMURA, Shuhei (G-COE Assistant Professor)(FY2008 -)
Main research interest:Cultural Anthropology,
Science and Technology Studies

*Dr. Kimura has been appointed as a  Associate Professor, Fuji Tokoha University from the 1st of April 2010.

>>Project Title of
Global COE Program
My research is concerned with natural disasters as a consequence of long-term interaction between “nature” and “culture” in an area. As an anthropologist, I have been conducting my field research in Istanbul, Turkey, where earthquake risk is a public concern recently, focusing on the activities of local people, municipalities, and academics and the relationships among them. As a member of this G-COE project, I am working with the issue of sustainability in the context of natural disasters, paying attention to local people’s awareness of the risk of disasters and their knowledge concerning disasters, as shaped through everyday life.

KOBAYASHI, Shoko(G-COE Researcher)(FY2008 -)
Main research interest:Environmental Science

*Dr. Kobayashi has been appointed as a  Assistant Professor, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University from the 1st of December 2009.

>>Project Title of
Global COE Program
The major topic of my research is “environmental analysis using GIS (Geographical Information System) and Satellite Remote Sensing”. Satellite data can provide us with information about not only the ground surface (reflectance, evaporation, land-use/land-cover), but also about the water surface (water quality, sea surface temperature) and the atmosphere (stratospheric ozone). Therefore this is highly beneficial and indeed essential for the processes of monitoring, assessing and/or modelling of the environmental ecosystems. The analysis of satellite data on the GIS platform constitutes the main part of my research, because GIS enables us to deal with various kinds of data including ground-based observation, on-survey investigation data, air-photo and a broad range of digital and statistical data. I will try to implement time-spatial and statistical analyses of those data in a comprehensive manner, so as to perform an interdisciplinary investigation in figuring out the state of, and changes in the environment, and in assessing the environmental impacts, both at the local and the global scales.

SUN, Xiaogang(G-COE Researcher)(FY2008 -)
Main research interest: Ecological anthropology,
Environmental anthropology, Nomadic pastoralism in East Africa.

*Dr. Sun has been appointed as a  Assistant Professor, Tsukuba University from the 1st of Janurary 2010.

>>Project Title of
Global COE Program

I have been conducting ecological and anthropological research on the nomadic pastoralists in East Africa since 1998. My interest is the dynamics of continuity and change of nomadic pastoralism under the pressures of modernization and globalization. As a member of this G-COE program, I am now setting up a comprehensive and comparative study to examine the sustainability among various pastoral societies in Asia and Africa.
