Counterpart

Hasanuddin University is a national university in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It was established on the 11th June, 1956. Makassar Field Station is supported strongly from the faculty members of Hasanuddin University, especially the alumni of Kyoto University. And, until now, many joint- research projects have been conducted in Toraja, Luwu, Barang Lompo Island, North Sulawesi, and Bulukumba-Sinjai through the collaboration between Japanese and Indonesian scholars.

Facilities

MFS has continuously collected the books, documents, journals, newspaper, maps on the eastern part of Indonesia. As of February 2007, it had a library of 812 titles (English language books, Indonesian language books, doctoral dissertations, reports statistical almanacs, laws and regulations, bylaws and journals, est.) and 452 terrestrial and nautical maps, all of which are open for the public. And, one desktop PC, one video camera, portable projector and digital cameras etc. are also equipped to support for on-site research activities. In addition, now, we can utilize wireless internet access freely.

Previously MFS had just two rooms. But, now MFS have wider space, as the number of
researchers has increased. At present MFS has four rooms, including a big meeting room.
So, we can organize seminar or meeting for reporting results of the on-site research in MFS.

Activities

MFS has organized a series of workshops and seminars to enhance the research and to exchange knowledge and information on Sulawesi. During the 21st Century COE program, five workshops were held involving the MFS.

Under the G-COE program as well, several workshops are scheduled to be held. The first workshop titled,”Sulawesi Area Studies in 50 Years: In Search of Its Identity and Local Systems” was held on the 11th October, 2008 in collaboration with Hasanuddin University and ITP program.

In addition, MFS has supported not only research activities but also education for Japanese and Indonesian graduate students.
